The Cux 87 "Krabbenkutter" {part 18}

                                                                        The Masts

      I had already done a little to the mizzen mast.  I had made the hinge joint for the spanker gaff and the gaff as well.  I also stained it and applied a couple coats of lacquer.....assembly still needs to be done.  the main mast was another question......I started work on it by first doing the turnbuckles {boom mounts}.  as you can see, everything went well, until I went to drill them out for the grommets.  it was at this stage when they broke off and splintered......what a mess!  to make matters worse, I tried my best to keep the sandpaper away from the mast itself, but it still left the mast root with a very slight curve to it {not noticeable with the naked eye, but if you studied it.....}.  to have to do this again was scary, at best, but I had to....I decided that this time, I would use my block sander.

      The first thing did was to drill the holes for the grommets.  after they were installed, I started to sand and shape them......around the grommets. it took a little bit of work to even them out, before long, I had a good pair of turnbuckle mounts.

      the shrimp cooker has yet to be cemented into place.  it won't be long now!
